REGULAR MEETING – SPOKANE PUBLIC SCHOOLS BOARD OF DIRECTORS
January 10, 2024
6:00 p.m.
  OPENING OF MEETING
The Spokane Public Schools Board of Directors convened in a Regular Meeting on January 10, 2024, at 6:00 pm in-person and via Zoom Meetings.
  MEMBERS PRESENT
President Lockwood, Vice President Slagle, Director Wiser, Director Bedford, Director Kozel, Student Advisor Yadira Covarrubias in attendance.
  INTRODUCTIONS
President Lockwood introduced Dr. Adam Swinyard and staff.
  FLAG SALUTE
The flag salute was led by President Lockwood.
  Mission Statement
Director Kozel shared the Mission Statement.
  PEOPLES' ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Director Bedford shared the People’s Acknowledgment.
  PROCEDURE FOR HEARING FROM THE COMMUNITY
President Lockwood described the procedure for hearing from the community.
  CHANGES IN THE AGENDA FROM THE BOARD OR THE ADMINISTRATION
No changes to the agenda were suggested.
  EARLY BOARD REPORTS
Student Advisor Yadira Covarrubias reported on her experience with wrestling and highlighted Parent Night. She also shared about her ceramics class Coral Reef Project designed to raise money that goes towards an organization that is trying to save the reef. The class is making ceramics that will be sold and the money sent to the organization.
  HEARING FROM THE COMMUNITY ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA
No community members were present.

  AGENDA
LEARNING AND SCHOOL SUPPORT SERVICES UPDATE
Shawn Jordan and Heather Bybee provided an update on district learning and school supports services. This will include information related to topics such as Budget, Enrollment and Registration, Staffing, Safety & Security, Multilingual Educational Services, and Grading.
  BOARD REPORTS
Director Kozel shared about touring Peperzak MS and attending the advisory committee on extracurricular activities.
  Vice President Slagle shared about attending the Native Ed Parent Advisory meeting.
  Director Wiser  shared about attending the Highly Capable workgroup meeting.
  Director Bedford also shared about attending the Highly Capable workgroup meeting, as well as a visit to the Shadle Park Groovy Shoes Con and Groovy Shoes game.
  President Lockwood shared about attending the DAC meeting where there was discussion around how equity is reflected in the bond and levy package. 
  QUESTIONS REGARDING DISTRICT POLICIES OR UPCOMING CALENDAR ITEMS
The Board reviewed calendars and signed up for upcoming events/meetings
  SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Swinyard shared that the Bond/Levy sessions are ongoing and going well. Additionally, Kindergarten readiness is continuing to grow and is up by 37%.
  ADJOURNMENT
President Lockwood adjourned the Regular Meeting at 6:58 pm.
